If you had the ability to vote in this year’s presidential election, who would you vote for and why?
Through out United States history, there have been a tremendous number of remarkable transitions. Some of which include the African American civil rights movement, women’s suffrage, and homosexual civil liberties movement. Another event that will mark history is the 2008 presidential elections, where, for the first time, an African American has a genuine chance at the presidency. The candidates for the republican and democratic parties are John McCain and Barack Obama, respectively. Exercising my right to vote for the first time, I will vote for Barack Obama because of his policies on healthcare, higher education, and the economy.
The current health care policy in the United States is flawed in that it does not provide for all Americans. The problem with that is, not all people have the medical insurance or coverage needed to ensure them the health care they need. Obama’s plan for health care is to implement a system that provides for all Americans to receive health care. According to his plan “your costs will go down by as much as $2,500 per year [and] if you don’t have health insurance, you will have a choice of new, affordable health insurance options.” Under Senator Obama, the American people will have access to better healthcare, enabling them to live healthier and longer.
Another issue that is to be addressed is the issue of education, and in particular higher education. The cost to attend college has been rising each year. In the last year alone the cost has risen “from $95 to $1,404” , or more depending on the college. With costs so high, families need help with expenses and need incentives for those doubting whether college is for them. Obama’s plan for education provides for those necessities. His education plan makes certain that “the first $4,000 of a college education is completely free for most Americans,” which would help most go to college by putting it in affordable range. Also programs would be implemented to “encourage more young people from low-income families to consider and prepare for college.” With Obama’s plan the number of students in college would increase and the youth of our nation would be enlightened.
Lastly, the issue that most are focused on is the economy. Currently the economy is “in its deepest crisis since the Great Depression.” With such a crisis on our hands, the US needs a plan that will fix the problems that the economy is facing and create measures that ensure something like this will not reoccur. Obama’s economic plan does exactly that. His plan is easily broken down into four separate parts. The first part is creating jobs here by awarding companies that don’t ship jobs overseas, secondly provide a tax break for all families making under $200,000 a year, third provide homeowners with options for renegotiating their mortgages, and lastly focus on long term projects such has the education and health care system that have long needed help. Taking these steps will help put our economy back on the right track and help ensure that a crisis such as this never reoccurs.
The US has had a rough time these last few years, but change is coming. Its coming in the form of a man, Senator Barack Obama is that man. As president I believe he will help mold the country in what our forefathers thought it should be. The issues of health care, education, and our suffering economy can be fixed. The policies that would be enacted under Obama will help the US flourish and put us back into the leading country that the world knows us to be. That is why I am voting for Barack Obama.
